Summary:
President Luis Guillermo Solis Rivera speaks about a generous donation of funds from China. In this speech he says that there is no reason to hide how he is spending these funds and that Costa Rica has received them in the first place. Costa Rica was given $24 million by PRC for development projects. He also emphasizes how this is a step toward a new stage of diplomacy as well as international relations with China. While this donation was not expected, a signing to a Special Economic Zone which was a Chinese business district was expected.
Thoughts:
I think that it's good that the president is trying to increase international relationships. My thoughts on the Special Economic Zone is that he should not have signed for it because this will give China economic control in that area, even though this could stimulate the economy in that area, Costa Rica should be looking for ways to stimulate their economy by themselves. I also think it's smart that he's not hiding anything about the donation from Chinese corporations, because this leaves little room for rumors about dealing with money under the table or things similar to that. Another thing is that I think that it wasn't wise for him to accept the money because they could use the donation as a way to influence political decisions in the future.
How this ties into the country:
This article ties into the political aspects of Costa Rica because it deals with the president's actions. This shows that the president has nothing to hide from the people or the world. This is a good leadership quality because it shows that their president is honest. This is also important because the nation will soon be creating a Special Economic Zone for the Chinese, and this could include the relocation of people and businesses. This article also shows how politics of Costa Rica can get involved with economics, in this case accepting a large donation.
