Summary:
Costa Rican music has dated back to the colonial times when the Spanish brought European style music to their shores which mixed with their native music to create unique Costa Rican folklore music. Today Costa Rica like many nations enjoy a variety of genres of music that vary from folklore, rock, salsa, and even to disco. Many forms of popular folk music seems to evolve or derive from the same four principal styles: musica guanacasteca, musica aldeana, musica limonense, and musica generalena.
Thoughts:
This article has led me to believe that many Costa Ricans prefer traditional music such as Latin rhythms and folk music. I beieve that this shows that the people are still closely tied to their cultural background and heritage. It can be inferred that these types of music are somewhat influenced by outside popular music such as American music or rock. This also shows how relocation diffusion affects other cultures because since the Spanish came to Costa Rica, their culure has been forever changed by the influence of Europen style music.
How this links to culture:
This links to culture because music can tell us about the values of a culture or how their society functions. Many folk songs are linked to agricultural practices. This is important to Costa Rican culture because this can help us infer many other factors about it's culture including economy, values, practices, and even religion.
